FiiO K11 — Desktop Muscle on a Budget

The budget desktop DAC/amp category used to mean picking your compromise. FiiO’s K11 is the point where that stops being true: a sub-£110 box that puts out more power than desktop amps twice its price, wrapped in a chassis that actually looks like it belongs on a desk rather than apologising for being there.

Build & Design

It’s a small aluminium block, unmistakably channelling Apple’s Mac Mini, available in black or silver, and it can sit flat or stand on end thanks to anti-slip silicone pads on every face. A monochrome LCD and a customisable RGB accent around the FiiO logo give it more personality than a £109 box has any right to. Round the back: USB-C, optical and coaxial digital inputs, RCA line out, and both a 4.4mm balanced and 6.35mm single-ended headphone output up front, alongside a three-position gain switch. The one real omission is a remote — fine as a pure headphone amp, but it rules the K11 out as a proper preamp for a speaker system without one.

Sound

Character

A Cirrus Logic CS43198 DAC feeds a pair of SGM8262-2 amp chips, and the result is clean, detailed and low on distortion and noise — closer to neutral than warm, which is exactly what you want from something this price acting as a reference. It handles 32-bit/384kHz PCM and DSD256 without issue. Push the gain switch to High with something power-hungry and a touch of clipping on heavy bass has been noted by a few owners, but at sensible gain settings for the load it’s composed and unfussy.

Power & Drive

This is the number that gets quoted everywhere: up to 1400mW into 32Ω from the 4.4mm balanced output, with 520mW available single-ended. That’s genuinely desktop-amp territory — enough to run planars that would leave lesser dongles labouring — from a box costing a fraction of what that kind of output used to demand. There’s no Bluetooth here; it’s wired-only, which is the trade FiiO made to keep the price down and the power up.

Comparisons

The K11 sits alongside the Topping DX1 II, reviewed elsewhere in this batch, as the current pair to beat in “affordable desktop” — the DX1 II undercuts it slightly on price and adds a 10-band PEQ and bus-powered convenience, but the K11 hits harder on raw balanced output and looks better doing it. Against FiiO’s own older K9 Pro ESS it’s smaller, cheaper and nearly as capable for most headphones. Owners weighing up the similarly priced Topping DX3 Pro Plus will find that one offers more power still and a remote, but at a real premium over the K11’s asking price.
