FiiO K17 R2R — FiiO Tears Up the Chip Order

FiiO has spent years building the K-series into the default desktop DAC/amp recommendation, but the K17 R2R is a different animal — it throws out the delta-sigma chip entirely and builds its own resistor ladder instead. That’s a serious, expensive engineering decision for a company that could have just bought another ESS part off the shelf, and it signals FiiO wants to be taken seriously above the price bracket it built its name in.

Build & Design

The K17 R2R keeps the familiar K-series layout — twin volume/input dials either side of a bright display — but dresses it up with real wood side panels that lift the desk presence noticeably above the plastic-and-aluminium norm. Round the back it’s comprehensive: USB-C, optical, coaxial, and, unusually for this class, full network streaming, turning it into a source in its own right rather than just a DAC/amp waiting for a transport. FiiO’s app-driven 31-band parametric EQ and eight selectable operating modes are here too, which is a lot of flexibility for one box.

Character

Instead of a delta-sigma chip, FiiO built its own 24+5-bit segmented R2R PRO resistor array — the top five bits handled by a bank of thermally-matched resistors rather than a conventional ladder or an off-the-shelf converter. It’s a genuinely unusual approach for a product at this price, and the tonal result is the R2R signature reviewers keep reaching for: a touch more analogue warmth and note weight than the delta-sigma norm, without the smeared bass or soft treble that gave early ladder DACs a bad name. FiiO quotes an A-weighted SNR of at least 125dB and THD+N below 0.0052%, respectable if unsurprisingly a step behind pure delta-sigma flagships on paper — the appeal here is musicality, not a measurement trophy.

Detail & Resolution

Resolution is genuinely high — texture and micro-detail come through cleanly rather than being rounded off in the name of warmth, and the XMOS XU316 USB interface keeps digital handling clean up to 768kHz/32-bit and DSD256.

Power & Drive

A discrete Class AB amplifier stage delivers 4000mW per channel into 32Ω from the balanced output — comfortably enough for the Hifiman Arya or Audeze LCD-X, with plenty in reserve for anything less demanding.

Comparisons

Against my RME ADI-2, the K17 R2R trades the RME’s clinical, mastering-desk neutrality for something rounder and more forgiving — not more accurate, but arguably more fun for casual listening. Against the Topping DX5 II reviewed alongside it, this is the deliberately-voiced alternative to Topping’s measurement-first approach, and at roughly three times the price it needs to be — reviewers at Headfonics and elsewhere generally agree it’s FiiO’s most complete and appealing desktop DAC/amp yet.

A note on newness: the K17 R2R only began reaching reviewers and retailers within the last few weeks, so treat any long-term reliability or firmware-maturity verdict here as provisional rather than settled.
