FiiO K9 Pro ESS — Desktop Powerhouse Combo

FiiO has been making excellent portable audio gear for years, and the K9 Pro ESS represents their assault on the desktop market. It’s a combined DAC/amp using dual ES9038PRO chips with both balanced and single-ended headphone outputs — essentially a complete headphone system in one box.

Build & Design

Substantial and well-built. The K9 Pro is a full-size desktop unit with a large volume knob, clear display, and comprehensive connectivity. Build quality is excellent — brushed aluminium, solid feel, clean layout. It’s heavier than expected, which inspires confidence. Inputs include USB, optical, coaxial, and Bluetooth (with LDAC). Outputs include 6.3mm, 4.4mm balanced, and XLR balanced headphone outputs, plus line out.

Sound

DAC Section

Clean, detailed, and slightly warm. The dual ES9038PRO implementation is competent, with good resolution and a noise floor low enough for sensitive IEMs. It doesn’t have the last word in transparency — the dedicated Topping D90LE edges it technically — but for an all-in-one unit, the DAC performance is excellent.

Amp Section

Powerful. The K9 Pro drives my HD600 with authority and control, delivering punchy dynamics and a black background. It handles the Schiit Magni Piety’s role admirably, though the Sparkos Gemini’s tube character offers a different, more colourful presentation. For planars like the Arya or LCD-X, the balanced output provides genuine grunt.

Comparisons

Against my RME ADI-2 DAC FS plus Schiit Magni Piety stack, the K9 Pro offers similar performance in a single box at a lower total price. The RME wins on DAC features and flexibility; the K9 Pro wins on amplifier power and simplicity. For someone building a first serious system, the K9 Pro is a compelling one-box solution.

The K9 Pro ESS is the Swiss Army knife of desktop audio. Does everything well, nothing badly — an ideal first serious system.
