Gustard R26
Gustard R26 — Discrete R2R on a Budget
Gustard’s R26 brings discrete R2R conversion to a price point that makes the technology accessible. Using a proprietary resistor-ladder network rather than off-the-shelf chips, the R26 promises the organic, analogue-like sound that R2R fans cherish without the price premium of established names like Denafrips Terminator or Holo Audio.
Build & Design
Full-size desktop unit with solid aluminium construction. The front panel features a large display showing input, sample rate, and filter settings. Connectivity is comprehensive — USB, I2S, AES/EBU, coaxial, optical, and Bluetooth. Both RCA and XLR balanced outputs. Build quality is impressive for the price, with a heft and finish that communicates seriousness.
Sound
Character
Warm, smooth, and musical — the R2R calling card. The R26 has a richness to its presentation that delta-sigma designs rarely achieve. Notes have body and weight, transients are smooth rather than sharp, and the overall presentation favours musical engagement over forensic analysis. There’s a beautiful naturalness to acoustic instruments and vocals.
Multiple digital filter options let you tune the presentation from more analytical (sharp filter) to more relaxed (slow filter/NOS). I preferred the slow filter for most listening — it maximised the R2R character without sacrificing too much detail.
Detail & Resolution
Good for R2R at this price. It won’t match the Topping D90LE for measured transparency, but it presents musical detail in a way that’s more emotionally engaging. Fine textures in strings, breath behind vocals, room ambience — all rendered with a naturalness that measurements don’t capture.
Comparisons
Against the Denafrips Ares 12th-1, the Gustard offers more features and slightly better resolution at a similar price. Against my RME ADI-2 DAC FS, the R26 is warmer and more coloured but lacks the RME’s parametric EQ and headphone amp. Through the Sparkos Gemini, the combination of R2R warmth and tube richness is absolutely gorgeous for late-night jazz sessions.
