Topping A90 Discrete
Topping A90 Discrete — Transparent Power on Tap
The Topping A90 Discrete is the measurement champion’s headphone amp. Like its DAC stablemate the D90LE, it measures extraordinarily well — essentially transparent by any objective standard. Topping replaced the original A90’s op-amp design with a fully discrete circuit, and the result is their most refined amplifier to date.
Build & Design
Full-size desktop unit with a clean, professional aesthetic. The front panel has a large volume knob, gain switch (low/high), input selector, and power button. Balanced XLR and 4.4mm outputs join the standard 6.3mm single-ended. Build quality is solid aluminium throughout.
The four-pin XLR balanced output delivers serious power — enough to drive even the most demanding planars without breaking a sweat.
Sound
Character
Transparent. That’s the defining word. The A90 Discrete doesn’t add warmth, sparkle, or colour — it amplifies with surgical precision. Through my RME ADI-2, the combination is about as neutral and revealing as headphone audio gets. Every detail in the recording is presented clearly, without editorialising.
Power & Control
Enormous reserves of clean power. The A90 Discrete drives my HD600 with effortless authority, and it handles planars like the LCD-X and Arya without any compression or strain. The noise floor is vanishingly low — even with sensitive IEMs on low gain, there’s dead silence.
Dynamics
Clean and linear. Macro dynamics scale naturally from quiet to loud without compression. Microdynamics are well-resolved. It’s not as “exciting” as the Sparkos Gemini — there’s no tube bloom or added richness — but it’s technically beyond reproach.
Comparisons
Against my Sparkos Gemini, the A90 Discrete is more accurate and more powerful, but less characterful. The Gemini adds warmth and texture; the A90 presents truth. Against the Schiit Magni Piety, the A90 offers more power, lower noise, and better balanced output, but the Piety gets you 85% of the way there at a fraction of the price.
Amir at ASR measured the A90 Discrete as one of the best headphone amps ever tested. If measurements are your priority, this is the benchmark.

The A90 Discrete is the amp for people who want their amp to disappear. If you believe the best amp is no amp, this is as close as it gets.
