Violectric HPA V200
Violectric HPA V200 — Bavarian Headphone Driving Excellence
Violectric, from Konstanz on the shores of Lake Constance, has been building premium headphone amplifiers since before headphone amplifiers were fashionable. The HPA V200 is their classic model — a fully discrete, dual-mono design that’s been a reference in the headphone community for years. German engineering at its most confident.
Build & Design
Built like a Bavarian bank vault. The V200 is heavy, solid, and impeccably constructed. Every connection, every component speaks of professional-grade manufacturing. The front panel has dual headphone outputs (6.3mm), a pre-gain switch, and a smooth, precise volume control. Inputs include balanced XLR and RCA. There’s no balanced headphone output — Violectric provides that on the V280/V281 models above.
The pre-gain adjustment (via internal jumpers or front switch) is a thoughtful touch that ensures optimal gain staging for any headphone.
Sound
Character
Neutral with weight. The V200 doesn’t colour the sound in obvious ways, but it adds a sense of authority and solidity that transforms headphones. Bass gains control and impact, mids have body without warmth, and treble is extended and clean. It’s what I’d describe as “muscular neutrality” — technically honest but with the confidence that comes from serious current delivery.
Power & Control
Exceptional. The V200 drives high-impedance dynamics like my HD600 with effortless authority — the Sennheiser has never sounded better than through this amp. Planars are handled with control and grip. The dual-mono design provides excellent channel separation and a rock-solid stereo image.
Refinement
This is where the V200 justifies its price over cheaper alternatives. The noise floor is vanishingly low, dynamics are refined and natural, and there’s a composure to the sound that cheaper amps lack. It never sounds strained or harsh, even during demanding passages.
Comparisons
Against my Sparkos Gemini, the V200 is more neutral and controlled, lacking the tube warmth but surpassing it in pure authority and precision. Against the Topping A90 Discrete, the V200 has more weight and body — it’s the difference between reading data and hearing music. Against the Lake People G111 (same parent company), the V200 is more refined and powerful — you can hear the engineering budget difference.
Resolve has described Violectric amps as “the benchmark that other solid-state amps are measured against,” and the V200 earns that assessment.
